Cool... Do they breach at all there? The reason I ask is that when we were in Hawaii in Feb/Mar, the wales don't breach as they are there mostly to give birth in the warmer waters before returning to the colder Alaskan waters. We were told they breach to feed by opening their mouths on the way up to catch plankton. They lose hundreds of pounds in Hawaii since they don't eat - unlike me, the tourist who does the exact opposite ;-). Thanks for posting this!!!
Great idea and such a great experience. My family wanted to go when we were on holiday once and I wasn't sure about going but we were very lucky, even the whale expert on the boat who was doing the commentary was getting excited and I have to say it was one of the most moving experiences I have witnessed.
@sbolden They do breach on their journey north - we have only seen it well a couple of times from this spot but the boats that take people out see some spectacular breaches - we saw a fair bit of tail action today lol
@paulaw This is the 4th year we have gone to watch them - we usually go twice in the season - I would go more if we were a bit closer - the first time we went two humpbacks took up the view in the binoculars as they surfaced and I was just in awe - I am sure my kids would tell you I had tears - we have been going back each year since - talking about going out on a boat to see them up close :)
Snap with the tears, my reaction really took me by surprise! Take the boat it would be amazing. The problem is when you try to photograph them I think you miss some of the impact somehow.
@derekvickers@suesmith@stimuloog@sunraye thank you so much for your lovely comments - I could spend every minute watching these beautiful creatures - am hoping the weather stays sunny so I can head out there again
@petja they certainly are - if I could bring myself to choose my favourite animal it would probably be whales - but so many animals are my favourite hahahaha
Brilliant! I would really like to see whales - the best I have managed is dolphins and they are ridiculously difficult to photograph because they are so nippy!
@steampowered yes the beauty of whales is they move along at a slow and steady pace - even their breaching and such has steadiness about it - they are so big
Whale watching is so awesome. They are wonderful creatures. There's nothing like being out on the ocean in a boat and have them come right up to you so you can reach over and touch them. We would often go way, way out in the boat and just sit and read and wait for them to come visit us. The dolphins are fun too. They love to play :)
@annied It's very exciting. Especially when they come right out of the water at the boat. I always thought our boat was pretty large until one of these guys came up right at the boat :)
