This is the gorgeous fellow who stayed the night recently - he is a Bare-Nosed or Common Wombat and his name is Ringo.
The Bare-nosed wombat is probably the most known – and the most misunderstood – of the three species. Its old name “common wombat” gave the impression that it is a common animal and numbers are in abundance, which may have been the case several years ago. Today, the Bare-nosed wombat is under threat from habitat loss, urban development, the debilitating parasitic infestation Sarcoptic mange, eradication (some consider them pests) and - rather sadly – human abuse.
The other wombat species, Ringos cousins the Southern and Northern Hairy-Nosed Wombats, are under threat of becoming extinct.
Adorable little guy! How did you end up with one of them overnight? Is Ringo somebody's pet? Just want to kiss that bare nose! Would he bite? How big is he?
@panthora he was being hand-raised by a workmate of my daughters and they do bite so care is needed and he is around 11kgs at the moment but he is not fully grown
FAV. Superb capture and close up. Great light, too. A very sad story, but this is happening every day. Seems the human race wants to eradicate by one way or another all the other being on earth - and mostly for its greed.
