I love spending time on the cliffs - when it is whale season it is even more magical. I don't have a big zoom but that's okay - I have fairly decent binoculars and truthfully - just knowing they are there and seeing them surface is thrill enough for me. I think this is the 6th or 7th year I have headed out there and the excitement of seeing the first blow has not diminished.
Humpbacks have a wide geographic range and are found in all the world’s oceans. During summer months, populations in the southern hemisphere spend their time in Antarctica feeding. In late autumn they begin an annual migratory route to their winter breeding and calving grounds in the warmer tropical waters of the Pacific. They return south in spring.
Humpback whales migrate around 5000km on average, one of the longest migratory journeys of any mammal on Earth.
A fabulous presentation! The whale season has just started here in SA and the first arrivals have been sighted last week. They come here to calve and raise their calves before their long journey back. Hermanus is the place to be here in spring.
@onewing me too Babs - I get so excited
