turf houses by anniesue

turf houses

these are a recreation in the Maritime Museum at Hellissandur (closed for the season)

Day 4 Photos 6

Thick turf capped rock (possibly tufa) walls - turf roof

It is very difficult to choose what to show - I've missed out a modern church, a museum we did go in housed in an old warehouse building, a harbour, tufa cliffs eroding a different speeds due to different densities of erupted rock, our only bought breakfast - an appetising smorgasbord of a thing - and more

PS they probably kept pigs here
They look lovely - are there any NOT in a museum - do people still live in houses like this?

@narayani they don't live in them but I think some of them exist next to the newer houses that replaced them, serving as animal shelters or 'stuff' rooms
