@onewing normally I'd say there was a barrow at the top of the hill - but I'd better do some research! Obviously it's more complex than that! For Barrow-in-Furness the barrow part seems to mean "a wood", though the natural hill or burial mound element is also used locally. If it's derived from bergh it will mean settlement. So I'd say Underbarrow is a settlement literally under the feature Scout Scar - and Thornbarrow a scrubby hill (now called School Knott).
