By pure luck I noticed this guy hiding underneath my car last evening. We chased him out and of course I had to get a photo. Al scooped him up and the toad promptly rewarded him by peeing on his hands. Gross!
Eeeuw. I guess it is pure fear. I have learned to pick tortoises up with care when I move them off the road because they also start peeing immediately. (As we live in a very dry region I usually try to hurry the little guy along to safety unless it is a fast and busy road, otherwise I believe they risk dehydration when they pee from fear instead of need)
