It's hard to tell who is the happiest to be here in this old house on the far Downeast coast of Maine, the humans, or Merry!! She has explored every inch of the house over and over after a very calm 6 and half hour car ride yesterday. The sedation did wear off a bit early, but the crying was soft and only now and then. We drove straight through, no stops.
This is one of the most peaceful places in the world. The scents of the sea, flowers, and the lilting songs of birds through open windows are just so relaxing. Life begins to flow slowly in sync with the rhythm with the tides.
I've been coming to this house, this town, Machiasport, on the banks of the tidal Machias River since I was nine. The house was my maternal great grandparent's homestead, built circa 1840. My grandfather was raised here with four siblings. One, Great Aunt Abbie, left it to my mother when she died at 97, here, as she wished. My mother left it to my brother and me. We share it happily with our families, incredibly grateful for our good fortune.
Merry has been entertained by the most amazing showboating gray cat bird who sings for raisins on the deck railings. We have enjoyed cooler
temps and all the familiar sights and sounds we love. I spotted a fleeting glance of a young moose crossing the road in front of a car quite far ahead of us this afternoon. We were greeted by an adorable woodchuck in the neighboring cemetery this morning. Cute but unfortunate for my brother's garden here. A few lupine are still in bloom and the the orange daylily faces are opening everywhere. I love it here.
