This hotel is a magnificent grade 2 listed building standing on the banks of the river Severn @Atcham near Shrewsbury . It originated as a Coaching Inn dating back to 1735 ,and it is decorated to capture it's original charms .
It is said to be haunted by an eccentric "Mad Max " Mytton who died in 1834 . Mad Max lived with a pack of 1,000 dogs and 60 cats and drank 6 bottles of port per day . His only interest was hunting and the "mermaids of the village " ! Eventually his money ran out and he died in a debtor's prison in 1834. Now once a year on his birthday his ghost appears in this building Following his ghostly appearance , his exit is also dramatic as he jumps from the top of the building !!!!
The Inn's sign shows Mad Jack mounted on his horse with a tankard of ale with a mermaid appearing to the front of him .
The building dates from 1735 and in 1930 was purchased by Sir Clough Williams Ellis , the architect of th fabulous Italianate Port meirion Village in N Wales , and the "mermaid "part of the hotel name is in the crest of the Portmeirion Hotel
Fav. Great processing on this shot to go with the interesting narrative. I visited Shrewsbury several times when my son was staying at Newcastle-under-Lyme and it is a very pretty place. Could have missed the place.
Nice & interesting piece of history. Fav
