The HighLevel Bridge was built between 1911-1913. It is a double deck bridge. The lower level is for cars and pedestrians. The upper level was built for trains to cross. It officially opened Sept. 1913. It cost $2 million dollars to build. It is 2,478 feet long, 43 feet wide and sits 157 feet above the river. Although train service stopped a number of years ago. recently the Edmonton Radial Railway Society has started running Streetcars across the top of the bridge once again. They run from May to Oct. each year. This prvides an amazing view of the city
Fascinating history, excellent shot! I'm glad to hear they've "repurposed" the train tracks. Industrial feats like this should really be admired and used rather than left to decay. It reminds me very much of the Brooklyn Bridge which may have been built around the same time (I'd have to look that up).
@olivetreeann Ann you are so right that it is so good to find a way to continue to use this bridge. The Brooklyn Bridge by the way was completed in 1883
@bobg actually it is. I really wanted to show of this particular bridge for the letter B and I didn't have a chance to get over to take another shot of it so I used one that was taken in the early spring
Wow now I can say I have seen two! This is an amazing shot, there must be stunning views to be had. I did once go over the bridge in my photo, years back when cars were allowed but I hated it, closed my eyes all the way over, needless to say I was not driving:0). I must go back up to Newcastle and get my Husband to go over with me on foot and see what views I can get. Thanks for telling me about this shot.
