With November comes the annual Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Drive. The red poppy has been around since 1921 when it was adopted to remember all the fallen soldiers who have served in all branches of the military. It is a symbol made famous by Lt. Col. John McCrae's poem "In Flanders Field"
The drive culminates on November 11th which is Remembrance Day.
Very nice! I remember getting our poppies during the Memorial Day Holiday (usually around May 30). There'd be folks from the American Legion selling them at the parade.
Always remember. Great reminder. Btw, you're wearing it exactly right --- over the heart. i just learned that tonight on the 6 o'clock news. i didn't realize that it was a bit disrespectful to wear them on hats, etc.. Wearing one anywhere is better than not wearing one at all, I would guess.
Nice portrait! We always wore poppies for Memorial Day when I was growing up in the northeastern U.S., but I don't see them as much any more. It's a nice way to honor the soldiers.
You wear it proudly..I havn't seen them being sold yet. usually there are cadets standing at the grocery stores, liquor store, library everywhere were there a a lot of people..
Interesting selfie - the popppies are REALLY big in Australia for both Rememberence day and Anzac day - they are beautiful and ephemeral and flimsy - and the symbology is chilling.
It's such a great symbol! And we will never forget that the Canadians liberated Amsterdam in 1945. Just around the corner of our hous is a monument to say thank you to those Canadians. Stll didn't make a good picture of it for the project, but still planning to show it here. It is nice, and I see it every day. So we will not forget.
This is a nice commemoration to your soldiers. I didn't realize that it is the same date as our Veterans Day here in America, only I don't recall wearing any poppies. I may look around for some on Friday. Thank you for sharing the story and the selfie. Very nice.
The big one this year 11-11-11
at 11am there's going to be a silence.
I'm all about remembering soldiers who died but have to keep it separate in my mind from the dreadful bloody politician festival of death that the first world war was. They should replace the poppy with a fish head or a vial of pigs blood or something so then we feel disgusted and remembering, by wearing it, is a chore. As it is it's slightly too romantic for me, a pretty red flower. Plus is soldiers dying the worst thing to happen in a war? What about the kids and the women? In the first World War US navy and Royal Navy ships blockaded German ports so that food wouldn't get through. 700,000 German civilians died before November 1918, and even after the war had finished (Armistice) we left the blockade there and another 750,000 German civilians starved to death. Where's their poppy?

I obviously have issue...but a nice portrait.
