Two of a Kind by bkbinthecity

Two of a Kind

Today's photo includes two unique buildings. On the right is the Birks Building on the left is Soby's Grocery Store. Henry Birks and Sons opened business in Montreal in 1879. In 1927 business expanded to Edmonton. The Birks Jewellers opened for business in November of 1929. Over 5000 people attended the grand opening. The building interior had counters over 200 feet in length along with large display windows. The exterior was finished with Tennessee marble. The only other Birks building in Canada was located in Montreal. Perhaps some of our 365 friends there may be able to tell us if that building is still standing.
When Soby's choose there location for a new store they also decided to build it to twin the Birks building across the street. Thus becoming two of a kind. Since there were only two Birks Buildings in Canada it too was Two of a kind.
I apologize for the poles in the way but this was the best spot I could stand in order to get both buildings in the shot.
I trust you will all have a great week
Cool catch
