I know it is cold out but....

So The other day while out driving I discovered this old bomb shelter in the west end of Edmonton. I did some research and found that it is on the historic registries list and it dates back to the mid 1950's. I never really thought about Edmonton having these during the Cold War and I certainly was surprised to find this one still around.
One more day of work this week and then we are going for a weekend away to Calgary
Kim

Interesting to see - from the 1950's! Why would they need a shelter then? Is Calgary far - I've been there by myself in 1966!

You know all of that part of our history seems so ancient but it really wasn't that long ago. Good find and photo.

Wow--I didn't know there were any bomb shelters left! I think it's good it has been preserved--bomb shelters illustrate what that period of our history was like.
January 31st, 2013
I'm surprised that a bomb-shelter was necessary. Guess we here in OZ never had to worry about a direct attack.
January 31st, 2013
Interesting shot -is it opened to the public...enjoy your time away

Oh, ouch. . .how can something from mid-1950 possibly be on the historic register!!! I hate it when something that still seems recent to me suddenly dates me! ;->
January 31st, 2013
That bomb shelter was definitely built to last. Hope it never needs to be used for that pupose.

It is great to run across these old cold war relics. Quite a few home bomb shelters are still buried in peoples yards. They make great wine cellars.

What a cool historic find! When I was a kid, my aunt and uncle bought a house with a bomb shelter. My cousins and I used to play in there, but we always wondered how anyone could actually live there. Have a lovely trip!
