Today we take a look at the old Notre Dame Convent. It was built in 1909 with some expansion work done in 1920 and then again in 1930. It was declared a Provincial Historical Sight in 1978.
In 2005 it was closed due to asbestos contamination. It was opened again in 2008. In 2009 it became the home of the Morinville Museum
lovely that they didn't allow the asbestos contamination to have it pulled down. Love these old buildings...can imagaine that each dormer window housed a Nun on the top floor.
The name Morrinville caught my attention because one of my sons & his family live in Morrinsville New Zealand......it jumped out at me as I scrolled down!! This looks a grander town than theirs !!
I love old, brick buildings. You found a nice one with a wonderful history! I'm so glad that you were able to capture the brick walkway and round flowerbed out front--they add so much character to the site! Looks like the entry foyer may have been a later addition?
@westcoastwallis It really has been changed on the inside as there is really no indications of it being a convent at least on the main floor. I am not sure what the upper level is like
@gratefulness This building sits at the back of a lovely park. I do believe the part you are referring to is one of the two additions they did on this building
Nice shot of a lovely old building. They have so much more character than modern buildings do, so I'm always glad when they get "re-purposed" instead of demolished.
Another great old building--and interesting history, too. I'm glad they have saved it. Where I live, a lot of old convents have either closed or been repurposed, since there aren't nearly as many nuns as there used to be.
