Today was a Civic Holiday here in Alberta so Melody and I spent the afternoon out and about. One of our stops along the way was in Coronation Park to take a look at the old Queen Elizabeth II Planetarium.
Growing up this was the site of several field trips. It was dedicated by Queen Elizabeth II when she was here with Prince Philip on July, 21 1959. It was not officially opened until Sept. 22, 1960. At the time admission was 55 cents for adults and 25 cents for children. It operated until Dec. 31, 1983 when the newly built Space Science Centre opened just a short distance from this building
What do they use it for now? I love planetariums! It sort of makes me sad that it's not in use- but at least you have another science center. Nice shot.
What a beautiful building and nice to have the memories. Expensive even when you were young to get in. We had an aquarium and planetarium at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco and it was free when we were kids. Now they have been replaced with state of the art buildings and are very expensive to get into. I can imagine that it is more expensive to get into the new one that replaces this one. I hope they have plans to use this building and not destroy it or replace it.
@fishers Thanks Lucy. The new Space Science Centre costs anywhere between $17-$25 depending on whether you are just seeing the Centre or taking in a movie in one of the theatres. A person can also buy a annual membership which allows for free admission
@pandorasecho Well the new one does allow them to have so much more than this one ever did. It would be nice to still have this one open for displays or something like that
I'm just thinking. What we have here is a portable, inflatable dome that goes from school to school and sets up on the stage or in an Empty classroom with projected starscapes as a planetarium. Wish I could transport that abandoned one here
What is the building used for now.?
