98 Years In The Making

So it only took 98 years but on Febuary 15, 1965 Canada unveiled its own flag. So after several months of debates, discussions and near fist fights Prime Minister Lester Pearson unveiled The red and white maple leaf. Now 50 years later The Maple Leaf is a sign of pride by Canadians world wide.
I took this shot of the flag that sits atop of the Union Bank Inn on Jasper Avenue. It took a few attempts to wait for a gust of wind to get the flag in a nice position for a nice shot
Lovely....I remember when it was coming in...I was just 7 yrs old. I can remember people protesting and hanging the red ensign in their windows and learning to sing "The Maple Leaf Forever" at school.

It is a pretty flag too and I love this image you have of it and the building around it. Looks so natural. FAV

I really like the Canadian flag - should remember an earlier one, but this is all that comes to mind when I think Canada. Very nicely timed shot.

Awesome shot

Nice shot, Brian and thanks for the history!
February 16th, 2015
Nice shot! I've always liked the Canadian Flag with its bold colors and graphic leaf.
February 16th, 2015

Beautiful shot.
February 16th, 2015
Wow--Congrats, Canada. This is a wonderful flag design and a lovely photo!
February 16th, 2015
Nice lines and angles.
February 16th, 2015
Cool picture.

Nice image and history. My late mother-in-law grew up in Vancouver (she's named after Lake Louise) and moved to the United States about 1950. The flag and anthem held no nostalgia for her. Charlie stills uses some Canadian phrases from her though!
February 16th, 2015
Very nice shot and I liked reading your story about the flag.

February 16th, 2015
It is a beautiful flag. I didn't realize it was so few years ago when it became the symbol of Canada. It was a good choice.
February 16th, 2015
I think it is a pretty flag! I love the maple leaf and the red! Great composition!

Alberta is all but a "second home" to me, and has been all my life My family is there! I remember when this flag was unveiled!!

Hey, congratulations on making the Trending Page, Brian!
February 16th, 2015
Thanks for the story. There is debate here about changing our flag, looks like it will take afew more years yet...
February 16th, 2015
Happy Birthday to your Flag.
February 16th, 2015
Perfect timing. Did not know there was a different flag.
February 16th, 2015
A great tribute to a beautiful flag and country. Our colours -half red and half white - have been in existence for at least a thousand years. The George Cross was added in 1942/3 when Malta was awarded that honour for bravery during WWII.
February 16th, 2015
Super shot
February 16th, 2015
That's something I never knew. I would have thought it was before 1965. Beautiful capture at this angle.

You have a very beautiful flag.....one of the nicest ones I think! My niece sets off for Toronto on Thursday, she had a job with the Pan Am team for the games. She is very much looking forward to living in your country.
February 16th, 2015
Never realized it was so young.
February 16th, 2015
Good for the Canadians.
February 16th, 2015
Very nice, I do like the flag. I didn't realise it was so young either.
February 16th, 2015
Thank goodness they chose this design. Lots of controversy at the time and now they argue about who "fixed" the vote. Sigh
February 17th, 2015
Nice use of lines and color!
February 17th, 2015
@happypat Hey Pat. I just read your note about your niece. My company is the office print and online supplier as well as supporter for the Torch Relay for the Pan Am games. What will your niece be doing. PS Tell her to dress warm.

I really like the way you've framed the flag here, Brian. I was a teenager in those days when the flag was struggling to be born--very glad it eventually was. Fav.

@kathiecb hi Kathie, not sure what Phoebe is actually doing but quite an important job, will try & find out. Something to do with the organisation as she has worked in charge at the Olympic & Para games in London plus Buckingham Palace tourist stuff during the summer. She is there until end of August for Pan & Para games. Her name is Phoebe Vincent. Sure she wil so enjoy her time with you!
