Shoes on the Danube Bank

Memorial to the local Jews who were taken to the river bank and shot in the 1940's. They were all told to take off their shoes because the shoes were more valuable than they were.

I'm in Budapest today, starting a cruise to Vienna and back, but remember the shoes form my previous visit. They really do look like real shoes and I remember touching them to make sure they were metal.

It's impossible to understand the actions of people who were so monstrous. A poignant, appropriate reminder.
