this part of arizona was once covered by the sea (fossils), got hit by a large meteorite (see meteor crater: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meteor_Crater), and buried a forest (petrified wood), among other weird things (see volcanoes: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Francisco_volcanic_field)
