For their 75th birthdays we treated our parents to a day out to Hiddensee - a car-free island off the Baltic coast. The island was a popular artists's colony in the 1920s with the likes of Erich Heckel, Kaethe Kollwitz and Carl Zuckmayer taking up residence. It is still popular with artists and now tourists from a re-unified Germany can enjoy the quieter pace of life.
Herr Neubauer was our trusted guide and coachman for the precious 5 hours we had on the island. We had an open top carriage just for our family and I don't think any of us stopped smiling once that day!
Sunshine and blue skies for the 3-hr ferry journey in the morning and the most stunning sunset and cranes coming in to rest for the night on the return journey just made the whole day a wonderful experience.
Love that blue sky and hint of the island beyond, lovely shot.
Reminds me a little of Herm Island off Guernsey. We had a horse and carriage ride on Guernsey too... under blue skies! When we went uphill I had to get out (as did my brother!) to save the horse a too-heavy load. hmph!
@filsie65 Lol, this is why we walked up to the lighthouse...the horses and carriage stayed further down but they did pull all 5 of us (and I easily count for 2!) up some inclines
@michaelelliott@claireuk Thank you both! Wasn't easy from the carriage, I can tell you! Quite a lot of motion going on!
@claireuk Hi claire, yet again lenghty absence...I know! Winter time in the NHS is just a bit of a killer, but I am fine otherwise, just feel I'm so far behind now...Hope you are doing well!
