The Shivering Crone

Frierende Alte (1937), Ernst Barlach Stiftung, Guestrow

Barlach was a German expressionist sculptor and writer and has been one of my favourite sculptors for a very long time. On our journey back from the Baltic coast to Hamburg my sister and I had the chance to visit his studio and residence in Guestrow, where he lived and worked from 1910 until his death in 1938. Many of Barlach's sculptures were removed from exhibitions and declared degenerate art by the Nazis and he was banned from working as a sculptor.

This is great - never heard of him but wow. The Nazis deprived us of so much talent.

@judithg @claireuk thanks both! Friends of his hid a second casting of one of his war memorials throughout the Second World War. And luckily there are still quite a lot of his sculptures that have survived and are displayed in museums all around Germany.
