Designed by Robert Erskine and built in the 1970s in the East end of Newcastle, Byker Wall replaced Victorian slum terraced housing. The Wall is a long unbroken block of 620 maisonette flats. It creates shelter from the wind and noise pollution and curves around little greens and two-storey terraces on the South side, creating a village and community feel not usually found in mass housing. Byker Wall is on the UNESCO list of outstanding 20th century buildings and the estate is Grade II listed.
Thank you all for the lovely comments on End of the Line and Platform 1. Really appreciate all your feedback. Still working on my B&W skills, so any comments more than welcome!
@fueast Oh, thank you! It's an absolute pain trying to capture some of that structure...seeing at it bends and curves and they had the audacity to plant trees and stuff ;-)
Gracious - 620 dwellings connected? Wonder what it looks like on google earth...(note to self to look it up when I've got a free moment) (hahaha)
Great shot
