The male is on the left. I'm not quite sure if his friend is female or a sparrow. They do not raise their young. They lay their eggs in other birds nests and those birds raise them as their own. There are voer 100 that visit my feeders every afternoon and clean them out. The cute little come in the morning and some are brave enough to fight the cowbirds for a spot at the feeder.
Oh - they sound like they use the same method that a lot of our cuckoos use - farm their offspring out for other birds to raise. Have to agree - it's pretty rugged on the other birds!
Ha! They are a nuisance BUT they photographed well so there's that!! I posted a picture of one last summer and I think it was Dave who commented...nice photo of the little parasite! :)
Fabulous image! We have cuckoos that do this in the UK. It isn't an intentional unpleasant behaviour, but part of the richness of wildlife making up the ecological balance. I think they look rather attractive and the colouring is matching the palette of the rest of the image!
