I was kind of wanting to do a tribute to Lonesome George who died a couple of days ago - the last of his particular kind of giant tortoise on the Galapagos Islands http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-18574279. I have to confess to shedding a few tears for the old giant - the world is diminished by another species becoming extinct. I had the idea of latching onto the 'slow' theme - maybe a lone person caught in stillness among a flurry of rushing commuters - to demonstrate the futility of all this rushing when we're all heading to the same place anyway and too much rushing and stressing will only get us there quicker. But of course, I was running late as usual and didn't get my shit together.
However, a young tot, in that exuberance and devil-may-care-ness of extreme youth, who's just escaped his older sister's care for a mad dash up the road actually doesn't feel far off the mark - sometimes we need to remember what really matters in life. It's short and perilous and we need to make the most of every mad-dashing moment.
By the way, talk about 'live fast, die young' - apparently these giant tortoises can live to 200 years, so old George at 100 was a spring chicken.
A nice class tonight at Ed Hick's folk academy - learning 'Waiting for the federals' - been wanting to learn that tune for ages. Then a couple of glasses of red wine, a halloumi salad and giant chips with Grace. Good stuff.
Love this little guy out alone in the big wide world, skipping along without a care in his head perhaps almost like 'gorgeous George '' living on the Galapagos islands!
Great shot - yeah, read about george and have seen a load of programmes about him... poor old chap (well, although 100 he was only middle aged as he was expected to live til 200)...
According to QI, giant tortoise was the best tasting food ever!!!
