Although it was "Finger cold" - a German expression when it is quite nippy - I went for a little walk by the lake yesterday. this guy was walking on the slushy ice tapping with what I believe was an iron rod as it made a fairly loud sound everytime he tested the ice. it was too cold for me to wait or I could've asked him why he was doing it.. two weekends ago some guys went through the ice at the opposite shore. police, embulance and a trailer truck with a hovercraft apparently came and rushed across to the other shore..this I haven't witnessed but was told by a reliable source. people are just plain nuts in trusting the ice. usually by this time ice fishing is in full swing but we have much milder weather this year and the double didgets and the rain last weekend sure didn't help.
Great shot, Bruni--though it does make me nervous looking at him on the ice! Funny how things stick with you--when I was a kid, someone drowned after falling through the ice on the lake behind our house, and I've never forgotten it.
@olivetreeann This is what I wrote to Diane Owens: these fisherman out here are antsy . normally by this time of the year we have lots of fishhuts out on the ice and people drive out tro them either in cars, trucks or snomobiles..so this year they're missing it because we already have the middle of January and the ice even in the shallow bay here isn't safe enough for ice fishing.
@bruni I've seen them in different places- VT on Lake Champlain and once in upstate NY in the Adirondack region. We were visiting some friends in NY state and their home was on a large lake. It was iced over and frozen thickly enough so we were walking out on the ice. But you could hear the water sloshing around underneath. I went out a few feet and turned back! The noise was uncanny and I just didn't trust it- even though you could see snowmobiles parked out in the middle!
@suelbiz47 Thank you Sue for dropping by.. yes it's awful. I just don't understand these people..it's not matcho either, so why do these guys risk their lives?
I saw that on the news about someone going through the ice. He is apparently testing the ice's thickness to deem if it's safe or not for any person to stand on or possibly fishing.... I used to live on a lake and they did that if temps got warm and made some of the ice melt. Nice shot, Bruni! You captured the cold really well!
If this pic was taken in Holland I sure know what he`s doing. Measure the thickness of the ice of it is save to do the : `` Eleven Cities skating tour.``
@pyrrhula Yes you're right..can you visit eleven cities by continuesly skating or is just the name for the tour?.. this guy was testing the ice to see if he could make a hole in the ice and do some fishing... the ice wasn't safe at the time. we had warmer weather and rain just previously..today it's bitter cold and very windy. my daughter was here to keep me company while Hans is still away and we walked a little bit but it was way to cold.
The 11 city tour is a famous skating composition and tour trough 11 cities in Friesland only can be done on nature ice and strong winters. Have been more then 10 years ago the last have been riding
