There was a hard frost last night and temperatures of minus 9 centigrade. Betty could tell something was different and wasn't too keen on walking on the frozen ground. I seem to struggle with getting a good shot of a foreground which is in focus. Does anyone have any ideas? It didn't help that Betty was pulling on the lead and telling me it was time to go home, so I didn't spend as long as I might have done.
Nice shot Judith - if you want to get the foreground in focus with a good depth of field, you need to use aperture priority and have an aperture of about f3. That way the foreground will be sharp and will make the subject stand out against a blurry background
I think the cameras are struggling a bit with focus because everything is so white - can't decide what is the subject (just my theory but I had a few shots yesterday where something unexpected was in focus). You can probably change the focus method but I'm not sure what you'd choose!
Wow thats an amazing frost. Bit jealous. I think you need some kind of macro set up to catch it in close up. Otherwise can you manual focus on your camera?
What @judithg said, I had similar problems and actually switched to manual focus on mine a few times. But I guess that is a hazard in itself with dog in tow...Great shot though and fabulous hoar frost!
Perhaps standing further back and zooming in would allow a greater depth of field, if that is what you want. If you want a small dof,can you set the camera on macro, stand well back and zoom in? That should then focus on your foreground subject and throw the background out.
A lovely bleak scene! I suspect your problem with focus is the overall white of this kind of scene - the camera needs an element of contrast on which to focus
