Liberty's of London

Our workshop at Liberty's would not have been complete without a wander round the department store on 4 levels. This is taken looking down to the central area on the ground floor. The two inserts show the Liberty's sign outside the store and the Union Jack quilt made by Stuart which we were emulating. The store was begun by Arthur Lasenby Liberty in 1874 with a loan of £2,000 from his future father-in-law. He had repaid the loan 18 months later! The present building built in 1924 is a mock Tudor revival and was constructed from timbers of two ships. The quotation underneath the clock at one of the entrances reads 'No minute gone comes back again, take heed and see ye nothing do in vain'. Turnover for 2015 was predicted to be £145 million. While we enjoyed admiring the fabrics, clothes and gifts we spent very little!
I like that quotation - hard to live up to, though! A good way to see a lot from this photo!
