I've just returned from a fascinating talk about bats. I apologise for the poor quality of the picture but couldn't get the focus right. This is one of the UK's biggest bats and is about the size of a starling. This one was rescued from a supermarket car park in Bedfordshire with a broken wing. It was nursed back to health, although it wasn't able to fly again. However it turned out that it was a pregnant female who gave birth to a healthy offspring. The bat society bought a polytunnel in order to teach the young bat how to fly! The young bat was eventually successfully released back into the wild. I have to admit that I've never been a lover of bats but I'll think differently about them in the future.
There's a certain 'eek!' reaction to seeing this. You're very brave to have gone to that talk, much less to get close enough for a picture. Very very very brave! But now I have to stop looking at it as 'eek' is taking over.
