This was built around 1812 within the castle grounds. Lincoln castle is a shell & mainly only the outside walls remain, so things have been built within. This prison & the present day Crown court. Lots of concerts & events are held in the grounds too. The prison is now a museum. There are some graves at the top of a mound , near the turret which was added in Victorian times, because that’s how they felt a castle should look! The graves are of people that were hanged. I think we counted 25 & the headstones just have a date & initials. This prison was obviously used prior to the new one being built Down the hill in Victorian times, which still houses prisoners today & ironically has the facade of a castle!
I find court decisions for the killing of humans very disgusting even if the condemned person merits nothing less. But it was common up to a century ago (maybe more) There is a cemetery on the south side of Malta for hanged prisoners, too, but I have never been near to that till now.
@gardenfolk yes they are. Lincoln is a city, though a small one & tends to be divided into what the locals call “ uphill” & “ downhill”. Uphill is where the cathedral quarter is & other historic things. You are also thought to be quite posh if you live uphill!
but it is one of the original copies signed by the barons and the king of England
