Through the Fence

Architecture 3, The Officers Mess at RAF Scampton. This was built from a design produced in 1934 by Air Ministry architect Archibald Bulloch. This was the designed for medium bomber stations & was designed to accommodate 36 - 45 men in the mess itself & a further 28 in the accommodation wings either side. I think it has not been used for many years, probably not since the 1950s or 1960s and was boarded up when we lived there around 1999. It was granted Grade II listed status next year. I don’t know if there are any plans for it.
This looks quite abstract. I can imagine you stalking the grounds and someone watching you on CCTV.

I wonder if my dad was ever in those buildings….i am pretty sure he was! A Navigator 9 Squadron I know their unit was based at Scampton for a while during WW2. Strange to look at that & imagine him walking around those buildings. Thank you for showing.

@wakelys ha ha this actually looks onto a public road which goes through the old Quarter area. No CCTV.

@happypat Quite possible Pat. I think it would have been nice inside in its day. I think they’ve made it listed so that it doesn’t get bulldozed, because obviously Scampton closed last year & there were development plans, sympathetic to the history, but then the government decided it was going to use it to house 2000 asylum seekers! I feel sorry for people that have bought old Quartwrs there & also there some prestigious houses/ gated communities built recently in Scampton Village, all of which will depreciate in value. It’s quite a mess!

@carole_sandford I did hear that….not the place surely…..listed so that’s good. Dad would be glad, or would he…..not a happy time I expect in some ways, stressful

interesting

It would seem a shame to knock them down. We have RAF Brampton and Wyton near here. Brampton was a spy site, and they also analysed signals there. New houses have been built on the site, and many of the old houses have been repurposed.

It does look rather forlorn doesn't it. It was still in use in the late 60s and early 70s when we were at Scampton.

If the married quarters have been sold off and they use the Officers Mess to use asylum seekers, will they separate them in some way I wonder?

@onewing the Mess is not being used for asylum seekers. ISO containers have been put somewhere on the airfield. All there will be between the houses & the airfield is the existing wire fence! No wonder they aren’t happy!

Great choice of POV. Thanks for the background

A beauty in b&w. Glad it has been listed. If it were here it would have been pulled down years ago and blocks of apartments replaced it.

Lovely capture of this bleak looking building - it looks just like my secondary school!
