We went to the Pompeii Exhibit last night. So I guess I am cheating but I had to share these. Tom and I were both totally fascinated by the lives portrayed. They were a part of the great Roman Empire on a major trade route. It was amazing to see that they used glass - and it survived the eruption. Pompeii has the oldest known Coliseum and the gladiator helmet was found there (with a bit of a selfie thrown in on that one.) They were a very sexual people and a society that drank - a lot. Dionysus, upper left, was the god of wine and fertility. The mosaics that were on display throughout were gorgeous. The plaster casts of the victims were so poignant. We walked the entire display in awe - they didn't have the casts until the end. So we were just marveling at what they left behind without focusing too much on the people that lost their lives to Vesuvius. Then it became so very real. This young man died sitting up holding his cloak around himself......
We visited the city of Pompei on a tour when we were on a cruise. It is totally fascinating. We were so moved when we walked through the ruins. You have captured this so beautifully, Cathy. Thanks for all the information you have shared.
Where is this exhibit? I would love to see it and the site of the city. It is sad about how those people died...we all get so fascinated by their lives, their things and forget them. But that is human nature.... Very neat stuff here!
When we learnt about this in Geography class so many years ago, I was so fascinated. I have always wanted to visit. Great to see it through your eyes. Love the collage.
@orangecrush It was hard to pick what to use. @maggiemae I loved the exhibit. @jenrobcarr Go if you ever get a chance. @yonnie I would love to see the city itself. The exhibit was so moving. @happypat I'm a history buff. @janets Thank you Janet. Hard to choose. @girlie And it was. Hard to think of it. @marlboromaam Thanks Maggie. We spent hours at the museum. @cindymc Thanks Cindy. It was very interesting. @espyetta The exhibit is currently in Cincinnati. They set it up so you walked through and saw the objects and the body casts were the last you saw. Really brought is home as you could see the lines in their faces. @vickisfotos It was. I could probably go again. @aurorajane I don't know how many pics I took the other night. @dishaparekh176 It is so sadly fascinating. You are right there looking at their treasures. @jdonnelly Extremely interesting and moving. @sangwann It was. I could go again @wordpixman Thank you Arthur.
