My Poppy is no great shakes as it just opened this afternoon - but perfect for Memorial Day.
My father quit high school to join the Navy after Pearl Harbor. All three of grandma's boys were in the war. My oldest Uncle was a Marine and my youngest also joined the Navy. My father was a tail gunner. I have old log books of runs. After the war Dad came home and married Anna Jane Holloway - quite a love story. He became a watchmaker. He graduated from high school the year I was in kindergarten because he valued education. When I was in high school the man that owned the jewelry store died and Dad was out of work. He found a job at a place called KDI. He started out making typewriters. By the time that he retired he was the boss and making the firing mechanism for our Hellfire missiles. He had a government security clearance that he was always on me about. I was in college in the late 60's so he didn't want me mixed up in anything that would endanger that clearance. He was a true patriot.
My thanks to all that have served our country.
And, my thanks to all of you for your kind comments on the death of my ex husband and all of the family misery that folks bring to that. There is nothing that is worth tearing a family apart.
Such a fitting and beautiful shot for the day. Great detail! I also loved your clematis yesterday which is a rather unusual view of one but I didn't want to comment on it and minimize the emotional moment .
Beautiful shot, but I have to admit, as pretty as it is, I was so impressed with your family history and all the bravery of the men in your family. They are what is day is all about. FAV
I love the photo and the tones are so very pretty. What a nice story to go with it my friend, similar ones go for my granddad; I somtimes think that 'they don't come like that anymore' but I reckon that they did what was needed of them at the timeand hope that anyone would under the circumstances; it would be a very bleak view otherwise....
