This morning @nzkites (John) and I went for a walk in an area known as Sanctuary Park, a community project to restore native bush and "Bring Back the Birds". We heard recently that the land had been sold, so we don't know what the new owners' plans might be. Our aim was to find a solved puzzle geocache in the park while public access was still allowed, and of course we brought our cameras along too.
This part of the pathway took us through a grove of tall trees which were creaking as they moved with the breeze. As we walked along we spotted some objects on the path that looked like walnut shells. Later we identified the trees as Black Walnut, originating from North America, so obviously not natives to NZ.
We did see and hear a few birds - tui, fantails, grey warbler - but I didn't have the right gear with me to photograph them so I left that to John.
