Las Fallas, Denia Spain

There were 11 of these enormous statues in Denia. They were dotted about the town and were judged on their height, balance ,colour and satirical content. The budget for each one runs into thousands of euros. €36000 to over €100 thousand was mentioned, depending on whether a previous design is bought and re used or a completely fresh one is designed. At the end of the week, having taken the whole year to fundraise and build them , they are burnt. ...and the whole thing starts again.
They would be quite startling to come across. You say they are burnt but what are they made of then. Seems a shame to burn them, a bit different, really like it

@joannakate They used to be made of papier-mâché. These days it's a type of polystyrene. They drape surroundings with wet sacking and firemen douse the buildings with vast amounts of water first. Each Falla is placed in a square or at the end of a street usually in the area where the local people will have done all the fundraising throughout the year. The largest ones are in the city of Valencia, but a few towns in the province of Valencia have a smaller festival.

That's an amazing statue but what an 'interesting' use of money!
