Anyhoo, here we have some United States one-cent coins, or pennies. From the late 1700s to 1982 they were primarily made of copper. Today, they're about 98% zinc and about 2% copper. But because they're plated with copper, they still turn a green-blueish thanks to oxygen and other chemical reactions.
Actually some of these can be turn back to their shiny state with either vinegar and salt, an eraser, or by using tomato ketchup. I don't think anything can save that final penny though! :)
No, I think it would only be OCD if you had put all of the pennies either heads up or tails up. However, it's a super cool image. :) And I didn't know erasers worked to clean them up!
@sarahsthreads - Haha, I was VERY tempted to do that but resisted. I looked it up and tried erasers on a few and it worked! But it failed on really dirty pennies, maybe some cleaning solution would help. Thanks Sarah!
Haha great set up Chris, it's very eye catching and a great visual of the disintegration of the pennies! It's neat you actually tried the eraser and it worked....
@olivetreeann@gilbertwood@dibzgreasley - Thanks for the comments Ann, Denise, and Deb! Good to know that my OCD feelings are not that bad. In fact, this image might make a person with true OCD a bit frustrated. Haha. ;)
@taffy - Thank you Taffy!! It took a while, but since I love organizing things I hardly noticed how much time passed. Haha. I used to save up pennies to cash them in but I haven't done so since I was little. Therefore, I've had these pennies for a while.
@kerosene - Thanks Caroline! I was quire surprised that it worked! Now if only I could use an eraser to clean every single stain in existence that way. ;)

Terrific shot that shows the color gradient very well!
@cruiser - Thank you Chris! I used to collect them when I was younger but not so much anymore. I've had some of these for a while.
@bkbinthecity - Thanks! I didn't know Canada used to have pennies! There's talk here and there about the US phasing out pennies but it never happens.
@grammyn - Thanks Katy! I didn't know they were made out of steel that year but it makes sense! Thanks for sharing that insight!
@rach_who - Thank you very much Rach! It's very interesting that the colors can change so much.
@kerosene - Thanks Caroline! I was quire surprised that it worked! Now if only I could use an eraser to clean every single stain in existence that way. ;)
