This is the first time I've seen a Grackle or any other bird puff up this big! I don't think the other Grackles were impressed. :0)
I'm going to post a pic of the same three birds right after this in my other album.. The one in the middle is normal size again, but he still looks angry.
I kept trying to shoo them away from the feeders, but was unsuccessful, so I made them my pic for the day.

I think they do this when there is a female around that they are trying to impress...I know that was the case with this cowbird I caught last year http://365project.org/lynnb/365/2012-06-01

Haha! Incredible hulk! He is hunkering down and throwing out his arms like Hulk used to do! I had to fav this! So weirdly funny! If you watch animals long enough, they do the funniest things! Btw..did you do anything to enhance their coloration? I have never seen them quite so vivid...but it is weird how when you shoot a Grackle, it seems black, but upload it and you see it is not. Ours in GA seem more speckled and not as vivid though...
Mine act like this on daily basis. I believe it does have something to do with the presence of females around the males. Weather might have something to do with it too, they get puffy when they're cold.
