Ely Cathedral Octagon by cmp

Ely Cathedral Octagon

The timber octagon in the tower of Ely Cathedral in Cambridgeshire is one of the greatest engineering feats of the Middle Ages. It weighs about 400 tons. It is framed by eight vertical oak posts 63ft high, each weighing 10 tons. It was completed in 1334 and is truly stunning.
man, why doesn't anyone build like this anymore?

Wow- amazing structure and look at it! You'd never know it was built in 1334! Buildings we've built in 1999 look older than this! fav
