A lonning (often spelled "lonnen") is Cumbrian dialect for a "lane". These lonnings have existed for a very long time, and are often bordered by traditional drystone walls ;ike in this recent photo taken in the Borrowdale Valley in the Lake District. This lonning leads to a traditional Lakeland farmhouse.
