thought you might like to see our little koala's back foot. such long claws and arent those fused second and third toes interesting. I believe they use these for grooming.
This koala is SO cooperative! I can well imagine you asking her to stick her foot out so you can take a picture of its unique structure. Obviously she complied willingly. Thanks for the nature lesson today.
super shot of that hind foot - opposable thumb with no claw, and then the fused toe with 2 claws (yes they all say this was developed for grooming, but who knows why it's not on any other mammals if it's so good? I digress). I'm interested in how pale the claws are, up here all koalas have black claws.
but it seems to me that you are down south, maybe in victoria? I say this because the southern koalas look very different to the northern ones - bigger, flatter faces and more hair :)
anyhow, I love the capture showing so much detail of the hind foot - great shot :) fav
Now that's a first for me, Chris! What a marvelous photo, and you refer to him as "your little Koala"! Is he a bit of a pet, maybe like my visiting squirrels? It's wonderful that you photographed this for us!
@onewing they certainly do Babs and can do one a lot of damage
@koalagardens thanks for the fav. We are in Adelaide and the different coloured claws must be like the different coloured fur from their northern cousins
@pyrrhula hope you can meet one sometime but be careful!
@cjphoto was very glad to be able to show everyone a closeup of a Koala's hind foot
@olivetreeann thanks Ann very interesting arent they. They must have very strong claws and feet as they can climb a tree trunk very fast and hang on in rough weather while they are asleep
@Weezilou We are always very excited when a Koala is on one of our trees and they are not a common as your squirrels. They seem to be quite happy for us to photograph them but they are often very high up or surrounded by leaves. I was very lucky to get this cute shot
