Today, we ventured off into the Everglades, the Big Cypress Preserve, home of the Florida Seminoles. While their reservation is probably 25 miles due west of my home, it is a 60 mile drive.
Though it is a hot day and it was noon when we arrived, the walk through the cypress dome ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cypress_dome) was much cooler and maybe even refreshing. The Seminoles have built an amazing museum out in the middle of the Everglades and this wonderful 1.5 mile long boardwalk to their living village, which used to be one of the Leader's private campgrounds.
I am fascinated the way the Seminoles survived the Indian wars by retreating deep into the swamp, They know the land so incredibly well. In fact, the Miccosukee Indians (who broke off from the Seminoles) have approached Washington about the continued pollution of the Everglades. They have noticed the bird life is dwindling and it was quite obvious today.
When I was young, the Seminoles were quite poor. Not many years ago, their gaming resorts afforded them enough money to buy the Hard Rock hotels/restaurants for over $1 billion.
It was definitely hot and humid today, so I guess this will qualify under the 3 H's.
@chard Not sure if they pay the Indians. I know the Semioles are more divided, with separate, almost like different tribes. I do know they got permission from the Seminoles to continue to use the name after all the recent flack about Indian names.
