Key Deer

A highly endangered subspecies of the white tailed deer. They only live in the Florida Keys. Male adults are only up to 75 pounds.

I don't think I have even heard of a key failed deer. Good to see one. We have lots of white tailed deer in Texas. Apparently they are a little bigger.

Wow....I just love the sight of deer. Lucky to see an endangered one. Those large snakes affecting the species?

@laurieewilson they were hunted many years ago (stopped in 1939). They were near extinct in the 50's. Now, there is a refuge. They are up to about 800 in number. They are active at night, so the road for about 3 miles is now fenced to protect them. You also have to drive 35 in this area at night. The large snakes that are in the Everglades are not in the Keys.

@danette Ah, that is good. I remember reading that raccoons were close to 95% wiped out in areas there due to the snakes. Thanks for the info. :-)
