At the Florida State Fairgrounds, there is a permanent village set up of old homes and other buildings. During the State Fair, it comes alive with demonstrations from blacksmiths, school teachers, people making sugar can syrup, etc. Floridians who have been here for generations are proud to be called Florida Crackers. The name is derived from the sound of a whip during the days the cattle industry defined Florida.
Wow, Danette, such a lot of information in that paragraph! I had absolutely NO idea that Florida once had a cattle industry! I think I've heard that term, but didn't know it referred to long timers in Florida! This looks like a *wonderful* place to visit, and I'm guessing you took many pictures? Seems a good day to do so when it's not too crowded!
@Weezilou The cattle industry is still important in Florida. My own parents raised cattle for many years. There is a nature photographer I have been following--Carlton Ward. I didn't realize until today that his great-grandfather was a Florida governor. In fact, this village has his great-grandfathers home. The younger Carlton Ward is on a mission to save this valuable part of our history. http://www.carltonward.com/
