Track Meet

Best on Black.

I played with my 24-70 lens last night at the track meet. I liked this one for the shadows and light. Otherwise, I'm finding that focus with my new lens on the Canon 7DMII is not as accurate as I would like and don't know if it's me, the lens, or the camera. How can you tell I wonder?
Keep trying and write down your settings each time! I should take my own advice though! This is great light!

I much prefer to blame the camera or the lens, rather than me!! But, I don't know how you can tell. I do like this -- the slightly soft focus is in parallel with her movement, and I like your use of the lighting to highlight the angles of motion.

Not sure how to express how much I like this and why other than to say FAV

Just had a look at your Exif and see you used ISO 200 at F4. This is an observation Daryl and not sure if this could be the answer but when I am trying for an action shot using my 100-400mm lens I would need a much higher ISO say 800 or even 1600 plus I would be using F 7.1. I am thinking maybe you need a bit more light to get a sharper focus. Play around with your settings and see if there is any improvement. If you have already done this ignore the above! Lol!

Wonderful light and the way it outlines the front of her body and face. I echo what Pam said. If it were me, I’d try it out at different f stops on a tripod in good light and see how it does. Does it generally focus spot on, a bit in front, a bit in back? Or does it just not focus sharply? If that, I’d figure it was the lens

The light is amazing! Nicely done.

Lovely lighting. I can also confirm with Pam that a higher ISO might work. I do ISO 640 for insects in case of movement, so I would have thought at least that for moving humans :)

@jgpittenger It seems to prefer the back and not the front, so when I runner enters the scene, it takes too much time to recognize it. I'm wondering if the settings need to change? My camera has so many cross focal points that it is hard to know which one to use, but I noticed the camera is going to what is behind the subject. When I point it at a twig on a bush, it's not even "seeing" it.

@888rachel @pamknowler Thanks! Wish I was spending more time with the camera as I feel like I'm expecting miracles or something, but I also don't want to work so hard to get the focus right. I bumped up the ISO later in the evening, and it's still not a great focus, but then again, later in the evening, I was really up there in the highest ISOs because it was super poor light.

@darylo just seen what you said to Jsne about many cross focus points. I always use centre focus point especially for a moving subject. I have always ignored all the extra focus points. That’s just me! Lol! Good luck!

@pamknowler My camera is actually created for that extra fancy sports photography--so that's why I'm really trying to use it for those extras. Oddly, with the new lens, it's not picking up on the specific point like I thought it would. I really need to just get out there and practice some more, but I've been frustrated with my results. I really don't want to experience this on a senior portrait photo shoot (but there would be better light there anyway).
