There are 3 active babies (I thought I counted 4 when the bird house fell apart....hmmmm). I stood in the yard long enough to be allowed photo privileges from a new angle--the babies can spot me by sound and sight now, which means they will fly soon I suspect. The parents are very diligent--removing fecal sacs every few feedings (and they are NOT small) and bringing bigger and bigger bugs. My favorite feeding today was a puff ball of moth dust when one of the babies consumed it. Poor moth, of course, but I can't believe the variety of insects I have seen these amazingly small birds consume.
As you can see, the duct tape is holding--last night, the house suffered huge winds, and tornadic activity. If these guys don't make it, I'll be crushed. I don't touch the house for fear that it will disintegrate in front of me. I also worry about rotting with all the rains. Kudos to the parents. Seriously.
Don't ask, just clicked on latest pics, spotted the purple tape, and just knew it was your photo. Hope they make it, after all your efforts they should. that is also a great shot.
Instant fav Daryl - not only do I love the shot - but I love your updates too - well done to you for working so hard to much sure these little guys make it!
: ) fav
I do not see how they ever allow you to get these shots! You must be so proud of saving this little family with some crazy patterned duct tape! haha Next year...you will probably start with a sturdier house. I cannot believe how fast these birds can find and catch a bug. They must hall have "eagle eyes." fav
Superb. so good to know that the house is holding and the parents are feeding their young. Hope they get to grow up and fly away too. You have done such a wonderful job of looking after them.
I thought I would update all the lovely folks here who have taken time to see this bird house survive. I'm here to report that my suspicion that a a few days remain was true--well, they have flown the wretched house! I can hear them in the back yard still chirping madly for their parents (who I can tell are nearby with their warning chirps), so I suspect they have made it into flight school. I DID see one of them successfully get out of my huge weed plot (there are photos of that too) and fly zig zag to higher ground! Woohoo! Thank you all for being very patient with my "reports" on the birds. These wrens were such a pleasure to watch--so much personality. My last shot of them together that I posted was this one-- http://365project.org/darylo/album3/2013-06-15 I'm still going to try to find them in the yard, but I don't want to scare them! Thanks all!
Birds are colour blind. Haha
