Today the long-awaited Miss Mary's Crankin' Ice Cream tasting happened. It's an event that benefits the Mary Drake House (from their site: "The Drake House is a crisis residential assessment center for homeless women and children in the North Fulton area, offering immediate housing and programs designed to provide stability for the children and assist the family in working toward housing self-sufficiency"). The event asks sponsors to make homemade ice cream for a massive tasting! Those who attend pay a fee to taste ice cream for two hours--it's truly one of the greatest town events we have!
The highlight is the ice cream eating contest and the cone stacking contest. We have former winners in my family--the husband won in the 13+ category a few years ago--funny, they have capped the ages now at 14...hmmm, wonder why!? My oldest daughter won last year.
This year, no O'Hare winners, but this girl, she had a blast. I think I caught her delight just at the right moment.
I can't understand why this doesn't have a bucketful of favs. I don't think every great image on this site needs to be artsy. This is a super human interest photo taken at the right instant, and that is a terrific reason to post it on 365.. Fav.
@rvwalker Thanks Ross for your encouragement Ross and for the fav. I've been a very poor commenter on this site and I'm just always happy someone came by to take a look. I take photos that bring me joy and challenge my skills--so I'm still searching for a "style" I guess, but if it is like all other areas of my life, it's probably going to continue to be eclectic. I loved being able to work on candids with kids and their expressions--what I did find interesting is that the background could make or break these shots so I'm thinking DOF helps when all the business in the background is fuzzier--especially when at ice cream eating contests!
@rvwalker I wanted to let you know that your comment stuck with me over the year last year. This month, our photographic society's theme is emotion, and I instantly thought of this photo because of your comment and others. The submissions for our club must be non-vintage, but that means they cannot exceed 12 months earlier than the theme's review time. It's so nice to revisit some of my photos to see how they can either serve as a submission or provide fodder for a new one. T
My head hurts just thinking about an ice-cream eating comp. Don't they get head-freeze?
