One of my best buddies (and fellow triathlete from days gone by) moved to Knoxville, TN last year, and I finally found a couple days when I could visit with her and just hang out doing the things we love to do. My friend Jane is in fantastic shape (and I am NOT), so she took me on a wonderful biking trail from the suburbs of Knoxville, to the UTenn campus gardens, then into the city for lunch. I am very, very out of shape, and the terrain was pretty hilly, but it was so much fun to go out and explore in the wonderful weather that day.
In the top right corner is a tower in the center of Knoxville, which was part of the 1982 World's Fair (the last time I was in Knoxville was then!). You can see a bit of the view once we rode up in the elevator--all free.
Downtown Knoxville had some lovely art spaces, sculptures, fountains, and I particularly enjoyed the one of FDR with a babe in his lap receiving the polio vaccine--with the caption "Service before Self." I don't think that motto really applies generally in the world today. :(
Anyway, it was a very quick trip with basically one full day of biking, eating, and conversing. I miss my friend, but I really enjoyed getting to see all the great things her town has to offer!
