AI Servo Goldfinch by darylo

AI Servo Goldfinch

I chased Goldfinches on my new "sock" feeder today. Note: it does not take a first attempt to get clear shots of any birds, but using AI servo is a really great tool when focusing on subjects that decide to move quickly before you can reset! Also, remember to have your fast shutter going (sport mode can work too) so you can get repeating shots quickly. Depending on your camera (the one I use right now can get 10 frames per second--very fast), you might not be able to have such quick shots, and you may find your camera does what we call buffering. I call it huffing and puffing because it can't keep up with all the shots you want to take successfully--so your camera may slow down. You just have to give it a rest, and it will go again. Rather pleased with these shots. VERY CROPPED BTW. And I did apply a radial filter on the bird body; I upped the clarity mostly! Hope this helps. Feel free to ask any questions.

Great set Daryl!! My Canon 5D Mark 11 only does 3 FPS and it is so frustrating to know i am missing so many shots!! I still can't make up my mind - should I upgrade to the Mark 111 - focus is much better they say but still not that many FPS. Or should I give up the full frame and get the 7D - that 10 FPS is sooooo tempting!! Fav for this set!!

Awesome shots, great collage. I made the decision and I now have the 7d mark ii, thank you for the advice in helping me make my choice :-) I have been at the zoo and tried capturing birds in flight a few shots posted in my albums. Loving the camera just need lots of practice, certainly is fast but need to practice framing as missed a number of shots .... bird flying out of frame ....... :-)

@pamknowler First off, don't kick the 5D MII and your amazing work!! You take gorgeous photos. It just depends on speed of subject. And while i love my camera's capabilites, it still requires great lenses to optimize all of those focal points and speed. I'm still using my cruddy kit zoom/telephoto lens! My goal is to have a full frame someday or even have a mirrorless -- those are the future!

@bizziebeeme I find the camera a lot to handle. I feel like a beginner all over again. Focus is complicated for me. Also learning how to use high ISO without too much noise! I wish I felt more competent with it, but i still love! Let me know how it goes!

So, I "played along" today on the focus work and wanted to stop by and compliment your focus work. It was all I could do to keep up with a swimming duck. ;) Nice collage and nice focus.

Dear Daryl, I always think of you whenever I switch to AI Servo, and that sock monkey swinging. But now, radial filter? moving on to newer things, I see! Must accept that challenge myself. I DO like how these bird photos turned out! Shows movement across the stills.

@rosiekerr -- you make me laugh! (And I'm at a public coffee shop so people are wondering.) I imagined you keeping up with that swimming duck! No doubt, also in a public place!
