As I was editing this photo, I kept thinking about @graemestevens and his eventful/crushing evening at Photo club. Last year, when I was a very much beginner at Camera Club, I would have entered the top image in photojournalism and thought to myself how good it was catching the action. The judge would have said, "There's a post growing out of that player's head, the bright shirt on the umpire is drawing my eye away from the action, the shadow in the lower corner is distracting, the speaker in the top right corner is catching my eye and I don't know where to look…." So, I have had a play in photoshop and taken away all the distractions from the action - watch this space, I might be showing a photo with finger signals like Graeme's one, after our Monday night judging…..
@graemestevens Glad you approve - we have had some really constructive judges, and although it is often personal taste as to the grade the photo is given, overall, it has improved my photography skills, especially in terms of lighting and composition - we are also supported by lots of competent club members who support the 'newbies'.
Brilliant edit...go you. Looks good. I am so not organised for Monday night. I have one image (and not a good one at that)....need to find another two.
The edit is great . Shows how new I am. I wouldn't have noticed much of what you say except the obvious bright shirt of the umpire, and I think I look closely at everyone's snap. Back to school for me!
So much to learn here. I am wondering whether cutting out the shadow of the goal takes away more than it leaves … if you get what I mean. Thank you for posting this instructive collage.
@snaphappi - yes I did wonder about the goal shadow too, but then thought that maybe it is only hockey enthusiasts and not judges that would realise the significance….
