This is the lighthouse on Tiritiri Matangi in Auckland's Hauraki Gulf. The lighthouse was prefabricated and shipped out to NZ and began its life here in 1865. It became automated in the 1980's and the lighthouse keeper (Ray and Barbara Walter) stayed on the island to become Department of Conservation officers, help raise seedlings and oversee the replanting of the island. With much help from volunteers and the Supporters of Tiri, the island is now changed from farmland to native bush.
Another interesting thing - the tree on the left of the lighthouse is a Norfolk Pine - it has had a disease, which has killed the top half. It seems that some years after the disease, they begin to regrow not one, but often two new tops. Have a look, you can see the two tiny new heads growing.
