We had a wander through the Botanic Gardens today and spotted these beautiful puriri flowers. The puriri is a NZ native tree and has flowers and/or fruit (berries) almost year round. This tree had heaps of flowers, while the one next to it had very few. The tui love to eat the nectar and in doing so, pollinate the flowers. Later, in the summer, the Kereru (wood pigeon) come and eat the berries (about 2cm in diameter) and disperse the 4 or so seeds that the berries contain.
This is such a well focused shot of these beautiful native flowers - so often overlooked because they are small. I remember them having quite a nice spicy perfume also.
