Pigeon Post by dide

Pigeon Post

I am one of three photographers involved in a project called 'You Might Be Surprised To Know'. This project is being organised by a lady who is interviewing 20 older people within our county. It is highlighting the fact that these folk have such interesting stories and should be really valued in our community. Today, @julzmaioro and I took images of a man who has been collecting stamps all his life. He was explaining about how the 'pigeon post' used to function.

@jamibann there is an island about 60 on from mainland NZ (Great Barrier Island). The weekly coastal steamer would drop off homing pigeons when it did it's once a week trip. If messages needed to be sent, then the pigeon would be released. A new batch of pigeons would be sent to the island each week.

Such a neat project to be involved in.. we have to allow lots of time as the participants are really enjoying telling us their stories.. amazing what some of them went through.. @dide I think @ethelperry would be a great participant .. pity she does not live in our county..

Lovely collection of articles from the days when 'snail mail' was the normal method of communication.

That is such a good idea. Often their histories and stories die with them, and it's great to have a forum to keep the stories alive.

Such an interesting project -- this photo also creates interest in and of itself. Imagining pigeons in little mailperson outfits.
