The Locks by digitalrn

The Locks

I went for a little historic walk today around another portion of the old union canal. It was just fascinating walking around, touching the stone here, thinking about the time years ago when this was in use. Along this stretch you can still see some of the original hardware that was all a part of the mechanical system of the lock. I know as the boats passed through certain areas, the locks were used to raise or lower the water levels to allow the boats to pass through, other than that, I have no clue how it all worked.
Beautiful

Fascinating ... I've always wanted to go on a trip with a canal boat. Must be great to travel at a slower pace, enjoy the beauty of the canals, the wildlife, stop where you want and discover little, forgotten villages, ..
